Idol singers have used magazine gravure to promote their music since the 1970s. From the late 2000s, members of AKB48 and its sister groups became regular cover stars, and in the late 2010s the photobooks of the Sakamichi groups dominated the charts: in 2022 they took all ten top places in Oricon's annual ranking of women's photobooks. Some groups now give one or two members a dedicated gravure role, an approach encouraged by Weekly Young Jump's Sakidol Ace Survival contest, which began in 2012.
